NEW TITLE HERE

DeFelsko’s PosiTector® RTR-H Replica Tape Reader measures surface profile impressions taken with Testex Tape. The PosiTector RTR H Replica Tape Reader connects to current-model PosiTector gauge bodies, making it an economical addition to the PosiTector brand of coatings inspection instruments. Simply slide off the probe you are using, and slide on the PosiTector RTR probe.

Measure peak-to-valley height as easily as with a Testex spring micrometer, but with the added bonus of storage and download of surface profile values to PC, or other digital storage device, and incorporated into inspection reports. Updated PosiTector RTR-H now has a wider slot for insertion of the Testex sample. Two dots on the surface of the Testex Press-O-Film make it easy for the coatings inspector to correctly align the burnished tape in the RTR H Replica Tape Reader for consistent, accurate surface profile measurements.

PosiTector RTR-H Replica Tape Reader measures Testex Press-o-Film Replica Tape with greater accuracy than conventional dial spring micrometers. The 2-mil non-compressible Testex tape substrate is automatically subtracted from surface profile measurements, and measurements are stored in the gauge for download to computer or upload to a mobile device or PosiSoft.net cloud-based application.

Available in Standard or Advanced gauge models, the PosiTector RTR-H Replica Tape Reader offers the same great features of all PosiTector gauges:

  • One-handed menu navigation
  • RESET feature instantly restores factory settings
  • Automatically subtracts the 50.8 μm (2 mil) incompressible substrate from all readings
  • Minimizes inspector workload by reducing the number of replicas needed to ensure accuracy
  • Solvent, acid, oil, water and dust resistant – weatherproof
  • Rugged indoor/outdoor instrument – ideal for field or shop use
  • Shock-absorbing, protective rubber holster with belt clip
  • Measures height (H) and linearized height (HL) [1]
  • Mils/Microns switchable
  • Check shim provided to verify accuracy
  • Long-form Certificate of Calibration traceable to NIST
  • Selectable display languages
  • High contrast backlit display for bright or dark environments
  • Auto rotating display with Flip Lock
  • Uses alkaline or rechargeable batteries (built-in charger)
  • Continually displays/updates average, standard deviation, min/max height and number of readings
  • Every stored measurement is date and time stamped
  • Screen Capture – record and save image into USB flash memory for record keeping and review
  • USB port for fast, simple connection to a PC and to supply continuous power
  • PosiSoft Solutions for viewing, analyzing & reporting data
  • Software updates via web keep your gauge current

The PosiTector RTR H Replica Tape Reader conforms to International Standards including:

  • ASTM D4417 – Standard Test Methods for Field Measurement of Surface Profile of Blast Cleaned Steel
  • NACE RP0287 – Field Measurement of Surface Profile of Abrasive Blast-Cleaned Steel Surfaces Using a Replica Tape
  • SSPC PA 17 – Procedure for Determining Conformance to Steel Profile/Surface Roughness/Peak Count Requirements
  • ISO 8503-5 – Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products — Surface roughness characteristics of blast-cleaned steel substrates — Part 5: Replica tape method for the determination of the surface profile

[1] “X-Coarse,” are available to span the primary range of surface profiles for the coatings and linings industry—20 to 115 μm/0.8 to 4.5 mils. An unfortunate characteristic of replica tape is that conventional spring micrometer measurements are most accurate near the middle of each grade’s range and least accurate at the outer ends of each grade’s range. That is why two other grades, Coarse Minus (<20 μm/ 0.8 mils) and X-Coarse Plus (>115 μm/4.5 mils), are used to check and, if necessary, adjust measurements at the upper and lower ends of the primary range. Inside the primary range, Coarse and X-Coarse tape share a 38–64 μm (1.5–2.5 mils) “overlap” region. Measurements with conventional micrometers require a complicated and time consuming procedure of averaging one reading using Coarse grade and one reading using X-Coarse grade to achieve reasonable accuracy. With a single measurement, the PosiTector RTR-H produces a more accurate peak-to-valley height measurement HL from Coarse or X-Coarse tapes that has been adjusted for their non-linearity. There is no need to average two or more replicas from different grades of tape AND there is no need to subtract the 50.8 μm/2 mils of incompressible polyester substrate. The advantages are a reduction in measurement uncertainty, inspector workload, likelihood of error, and the number of replicas needed by inspectors to assure accuracy. The PosiTector RTR-H can also display a height value (H) that is comparable to what conventional analog spring micrometers would display after the 50.8 μm/ 2 mils of incompressible polyester substrate has been subtracted.
